Over recent years a number of reports have concluded that there are few places in Melbourne's CBD that provide a constructive, life-enhancing environment for marginalised and disadvantaged people.
Our own experience tells us that the community of inner city Melbourne lacks the spaces and places where those most on the margins, particularly the homeless, can receive appropriate assistance and experience a sense of community and belonging.
In addition to the other services provided by The Salvation Army at 69 Bourke St, we have seen the need to create a space that is not so much client/staff focussed and appointment-based, but more relational and informal.
A place that people can identify with and have some ownership over, that helps break down the professional barrier between 'service provider' and 'client'. A place that runs on a community development model as distinct from a welfare model. |
