Federation Square is the centre of Melbourne. It brings together a creative mix of attractions including galleries, cinemas, award-winning restaurants, function centre, cafes, bars, festivals and events and public open spaces embraced by some of the most striking architecture in the world.
In the 1840s Surveyor Robert Hoddle designed Melbourne's city grid, which has served the city well for over 150 years and also contributed significantly to the widely held belief that Melbourne is a well-designed and well-planned city.
However there are two features that compared with the other great cities of the world, central Melbourne needed to address: to link the central business district to the river, one of its best natural assets, and to create a true public square, a living and breathing focus for the city and its people. |
